"Lincoln" is a biopic by Steven Spielberg, set during the Civil War. War films and Spielberg films have a storied history in Oscar's sound categories, including previous wins for "Letters from Iwo Jima," "Pearl Harbor," "Black Hawk Down," "Saving Private Ryan," "Jurassic Park," and more.
"Zero Dark Thirty" is an action film about the killing of Osama bin Laden. It's directed by Kathryn Bigelow, whose previous film, "The Hurt Locker," won both sound Oscars in 2009.
"Wreck-It Ralph" is an animated comedy. Animated films are often nominated in the sound categories, including "Toy Story 3," "WALL-E," and "Ratatouille." The last animated film to win a sound award was "The Incredibles" for Sound Editing in 2004.

"The Grey" is an action thriller about survivors of a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. Action films often do well in the sound categories.
"Dark Knight Rises" would be the third Batman film recognized for achievement in sound. Previously, "Batman Forever" was nominated, and "The Dark Knight" won Sound Editing.
"The Bourne Legacy" is a spy-themed action film. It is a sequel to "The Bourne Ultimatum," which won Sound Mixing and Sound Editing in 2007.
"The Avengers" would be the latest superhero film honored for achievement in sound. "The Dark Knight" won Sound Editing and the "Spider-Man" and "Iron Man" franchises have been nominated.
"Amazing Spider-Man" would not be the first superhero film honored for sound. "Batman Forever" was nominated, and "Dark Knight" won Sound Editing.
"Huntsman" is a fantasy film. Fantasies have won sound awards before, including "King Kong" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula."
"Skyfall" is the latest film in the James Bond franchise. Big-budget action films are often nominated for sound awards, but no Bond film has won since "Goldfinger" won Sound Editing in 1964.
"Prometheus" is a sci-fi action film. Big-budget action films often are nominated for and win sound awards. Previous Ridley Scott films to win for sound were "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Down," which both won Sound Mixing.
"Men in Black 3" is a sci-fi comedy. Sci-fi films are often nominated for achievements in sound, but the "Men in Black" franchise has yet to be recognized.
"Looper" is a sci-fi thriller. Sci-fi films often do well in sound categories, including previous winners "The Matrix" and "Inception."
"Life of Pi" is an adventure film directed by Ang Lee. Adventure films often do well in sound categories at the Oscars, including last year's winner "Hugo."
"Les Miserables" is a period musical. Musicals have historically done very well in the Sound Mixing categy, including recent wins for "Dreamgirls" and "Chicago," but musicals are less successful in the Sound Editing race.
"Killing Them Softly" is a crime thriller directed by Andrew Dominik, who has not had a film nominated in a sound category at the Oscars.
"John Carter" is a sci-fi action film set on Mars. CGI-driven action films tend to do well in the sound categories.
"Jack Reacher" is a crime thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise.
"Frankenweenie" is a stop-motion animated film by Tim Burton. Though computer-animated films have done well in this category in recent years, stop-motion films have not fared as well.
"Flight" is a contemporary drama about narrowly averted airline disaster. Several films by Robert Zemeckis have been honored for sound, including nominations for "Cast Away," "Contact," and "Forrest Gump" and Sound Editing wins for "Back to the Future" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."
"Django Unchained" is a western directed by Quentin Tarantino, whose last film, "Inglourious Basterds," was nominated for both sound awards in 2009.
"Cloud Atlas" is a multi-generational fantasy film. It is co-directed by the Wachowskis, whose "The Matrix" won both sound awards in 1999.
"Brave" is an animated adventure film from Pixar. The animation giant has done well in sound categories in recent years, including nominations for "WALL-E," "Up, and "Toy Story 3," and a Sound Editing win for "The Incredibles."
"Battleship" is a sci-fi action film inspired by the popular board game. CGI-driven action films often do well in sound categories.
"Vampire Hunter" is a period horror film that imagines our 16th president as a killer of the undead. Horror films have not traditionally won awards for sound.
