On Wednesday, the Producers Guild of America announced nominees for five television awards. Just as the guild follows the motion picture academy's eligibility period by considering films released during the 2011 calendar year, so too it heeds to the TV academy's schedule and nominates programs airing between June 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011.

Two-time Emmy winner "Modern Family" defends its PGA title against two-time Golden Globe winner "Glee," three-time PGA winner "30 Rock" and category newcomers "The Big Bang Theory" and "Parks and Recreation." All five of these shows were in the running at this year's Emmys.

Five of the six Emmy nominees for top drama series are also in contention for the PGA prize: reigning three-time champ "Mad Men" hopes to four-peat as it did at the Emmys against returning nominee "Dexter" and first-time contenders "Boardwalk Empire," "Game of Thrones" and "The Good Wife."

Among non-fiction programming, "The Deadliest Catch" defends its title against returning nominees "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" and "Undercover Boss" and newcomers "30 for 30" and "American Masters."

The catch-all category has been divided into separate competition and live entertainment/talk races. Last year's winner "The Colbert Report" is up against returning nominee "Real Time with Bill Maher,"  reigning Daytime Emmy champ "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "Saturday Night Live" and the Emmy-winning 2010 Tonys kudocast.

Eight-time Emmy winner "The Amazing Race" contends against 2010 Emmy winner "Top Chef," "American Idol," "Dancing With the Stars" and "Project Runway."

The nominees for top TV movie or mini-series will be announced along with the film contenders on Jan. 3. Kudos will be handed out on Jan. 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
