Andrew Garfield Q&A: ‘Hacksaw Ridge’

“They’re both incredibly passionate about their subjects. They are very, very trusting of the people they hire. They’re good leaders in the sense that they will encourage you towards going further than you’ve gone in your work so far,” reveals Andrew Garfield about similarities of the two directors for whom he worked in 2016: Oscar winners Martin Scorsese (“Silence”) and Mel Gibson (“Hacksaw Ridge”). In our recent interview (watch above), he adds, “It’s all you really want as an actor is to be able to show up and serve up your heart and soul to have it seen and have it recognized and to have it adjusted as need be. That trust is so vital.”

For “Silence,” Garfield stars as Father Rodrigues, a Jesuit priest in the 17th century searching for his mentor (Liam Neeson) who has been captured in Japan. When he first saw the film in Scorsese’s New York screening room, he admits, “It was very, very deeply moving just because I could feel all the work that everyone had put into it, especially Marty. It felt like a long prayer, like a meditation, so profoundly personal for him.”

In “Hacksaw Ridge,” he plays the real life World War II hero Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who wanted to be a medic but refused to pick up a gun. For the role, he has already received Golden Globe, SAG and Critics’ Choice nominations as Best Actor. Of the recognition, he says, “I’m not going to complain about it. I feel very grateful about it and am very surprised and moved by it. It’s lovely to feel like your work is being appreciated.”

The only other major awards success for Garfield was with “The Social Network.” That 2010 film directed by David Fincher brought him Golden Globe and SAG Awards nominations as Best Supporting Actor plus a SAG ensemble bid. He also competed at BAFTA that season for the Rising Star Award (defeated by Tom Hardy). Other films in his career have included “Lions for Lambs,” “The Other Boleyn Girl,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and “99 Homes.”
