Carson Daly Q&A: ‘The Voice’

Last year "The Voice" pulled off what no other singing-competition program has ever done – it won the Emmy for Best Reality Competition Show. Its victory was "a Cinderella story," producer Carson Daly tells us in our webcam chat. "We're as stunned as you."

In addition to scoring such approval from the TV industry, "The Voice" reaps sky-high Nielsen ratings and has strong backing from TV critics. Over the past two days, both journo kudos  – the Television Critics Association Awards and Critics' Choice TV Awards – nominated "The Voice" for Best Reality Show.

What is its secret to success?

Daly credits its "gamesmanship, the blind auditions" and notes that it has "a tremendous amount of heart and storytelling." There's also the "coaches' chemistry, which is part sitcom, part reality show" and he says that it's fun to watch the contestants confront the judges and say, "Well, what are you going to do for me?" Daly adds, "That dynamic shift of power is great American TV."

Chris Beachum and I dish with Daly about all this in our webcam video – plus we invite our prediction-contest winner, Brian Clores, to join the chat.
