Christian Slater Q&A: ‘Mr. Robot’

“It’s darker. There’s definitely some things that happen that will surprise and shock people,” admits actor Christian Slater as we chat via webcam (watch above) about the upcoming second season of “Mr. Robot” debuting this summer on USA Network. He adds, “Somebody asked me the other day what to expect from season two, and all I can say is the unexpected.”

During last year’s first season, it was revealed that Slater’s character, Mr. Robot, was both dead and the father of the young main protagonist Elliot Alderson (played by Rami Malek). His ghost recruits Elliot into a world of cyber-crime and corporate hacking, playing on the delusions and depressions of the young man. Watch our recent chat with Malek here.

Shooting scenes revealing those major secrets of the freshman season were “very emotional” according to Slater. He recalls, ” It was an emotional script to read. Sitting around the table when we had that read-through was particularly very special. We hadn’t seen episode 10 yet, so we really didn’t know what to expect or how Sam (Esmail, show creator) was going to deal with that relevation and what was going to happen to the relationship.”

The program is a ratings hit, critical success, and awards darling. Even though Slater has been acting since he was a child, he received his first Golden Globe nomination and win this past January, claiming the catch-all TV Supporting Actor prize. He followed that with another victory at the Critics Choice Awards later that month. Of the Globe event, he admits his first thought was “Panic!” and then proclaims, “It was thrilling; it was humbling; it was exciting. It was funny also because I have been in the business a long time, so I knew a lot of the Hollywood Foreign Press people for years. Some of them I had met when I was 16 years old. It was nice to get the opportunity to reconnect with a lot of those people.”

In addition to Slater’s trophies, the show prevailed as Best Drama Series at those same two ceremonies. The episodes from the first season are now on the Emmy Awards ballot and nominations will be announced on July 14, the day after the second season of “Mr. Robot” debuts on USA.
