Dan Bucatinsky Q&A: ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’
“People throw the term ‘passion project’ around a lot,” divulges Dan Bucatinsky as we chat via webcam (watch the exclusive video above) about “Who Do You Think You Are?” “I have to say that this one truly is.” Bucatinsky and Lisa Kudrow executive produce this TLC series that gives celebrities the opportunity to research their family trees to often surprising results. Now in its ninth season, the show has been nominated at the Emmys for Best Structured Reality Program.
“Who Do You Think You Are?” is based on a UK series of the same name created by Alex Graham, who is also an executive producer on the USA iteration. Bucatinsky was thrilled by “the opportunity to bring that to American audiences” and was excited “to tell these historical stories, and put them into context, by having these well-known travel guides.” Participants this season included Courtney Cox, who discovered she was descended from English royalty, Julie Bowen, Jennifer Grey, Noah Wyle, Jessica Biel, Smokey Robinson, John Stamos, and Liv Tyler. The producers are submitting for Emmy voters the episode about Cox, former “Friends” co-star of Kudrow.
Also known for his acting career, Bucatinsky won an Emmy as Best Drama Guest Actor for “Scandal” in 2013. He and Kudrow competed twice more for “Who Do You Think You Are?” (2012 and 2014), and also contended in Best Short Form Live-Action Entertainment Program for “Web Therapy” in 2012.
