Dave Filoni Q&A: ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ producer
“In the creative arts, you’re trying to get everybody to work at their highest level on these projects,” divulges “Star Wars: Rebels” supervising director Dave Filoni during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above) when asked about his recent Emmy nomination for Best Children’s Program. He adds, “So it’s nice just to have the recognition from your peers, that you’re doing something that’s a little extra special and of quality.”
Based on George Lucas‘ 1977 sci-fi classic, this Disney XD animated series follows a ragtag starship crew standing up to the evil Empire in their attempts to hunt down Jedi Knights. Filoni competes as an executive producer on the show.
“Rebels” was the first series produced by the company following its acquisition by Walt Disney Studios. “It had a lot of importance,” reveals Filoni, “to show the world we were still Lucasfilm and doing things the way we had always done, and hopefully better and improving as we go, as we always have.” He adds, “We wanted to tell a story that was in the classic period of ‘Star Wars’ (and has) a lot of the familiar faces (but is) “set against a new group of characters.”
Filoni has been with Lucasfilm Animation since the very beginning, helping to build it from the ground up. He won Daytime Emmys for their flagship series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (Best Special Class Program in 2013 and 2014) and competed three more times (Best Directing in an Animated Program in 2013 and 2015 and Best Special Class Program in 2015). He has worked on such animated programs as “King of the Hill,” “The Oblongs,” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
