Davina Lamont Q&A: ‘Genius’ hair and makeup
“It took some time,” reveals makeup artist and hairstylist Davina Lamont during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above) when asked about her exhaustive work on “Genius.” This National Geographic production stars Geoffrey Rush as the older famed physicist Albert Einstein, following him from his early years (portrayed by Johnny Flynn) through his time as a patent clerk and finally to the development of his theory of relativity. The limited series is NatGeo’s first stab at scripted television and is produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, who directed the first installment.
Transforming the recognizable Rush into the equally recognizable Einstein was no easy task. “Geoffrey had a lot of input into his look, which I thought was fantastic,” Lamont divulges. “He had decided that he was going to grow his hair for the role, which made it a lot easier for us to interchange… and gradually make him older.” Through several tests, Lamont and her team were able to take Einstein “from his mid-forties up to 75 years-of-age.”
Lamont has created a variety of looks on several high profile projects, including feature films “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “The Last Samurai,” “King Kong,” and “X-Men: First Class” plus TV miniseries “Top of the Lake.” Could she reap her first Emmy bid this year?
