Donald Mowat Interview: ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and ‘Stronger’ makeup
“I’m not going to lie: it was the most tremendous pressure in my career,” divulges “Blade Runner 2049” makeup department head Donald Mowat during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above). Directed by Denis Villeneuve, this long awaited sequel to Ridley Scott‘s 1982 sci-fi classic centers on a young blade runner (Ryan Gosling) who discovers secrets that lead him to track down former blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for 30 years. “I’ve always referenced the work they did in ‘Blade Runner,'” he adds, “so for me, it’s iconic, as it is to so many people, especially in the film business.”
We also talked about his work on “Stronger,” a biopic about Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal), who lost both his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Tatiana Maslany plays Erin Hurley, Bauman’s on-again-off-again girlfriend who helps him overcome his personal and physical afflictions. “Working on ‘Stronger’ makes me want to cry a little bit because it’s so touching,'” he reveals. “Jeff Bauman is a real life hero to me, and Jake really gave it a lot of depth and character on this little movie with not a lot of money that we shot in Boston.”
Mowat won an Emmy in 1992 for the TV Movie “Mark Twain and Me.” He contended at the BAFTAs for “Nocturnal Animals” (2016). Recent credits include “The Fighter” (2010), “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011), “Skyfall” (2012), “Prisoners” (2013), “Nightcrawler” (2014), and “Sicario” (2015).
