Ellie Kemper Q&A: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’
“Personally, the whole thing was a blur to me because I wasn’t sleeping very much because I had a baby in July. On a personal level, I felt a little out of it the whole time, so when I’m watching the episodes now, I’m like ‘Oh right, we did do that!’ because my memory is gone,” reveals Ellie Kemper about the latest season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which just started streaming weeks ago on Netflix. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she adds, “What felt different about Season 3 was that now that we have these longer episodes of 28 minutes, 32 minutes… there’s so much more time that we can devote to all of the characters, to see everyone’s stories get fleshed out even more.”
For the comedy created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (“30 Rock”), Kemper plays the title character, a former kidnap victim as a teen who has moved to New York City to start a new life as an adult. She stars alongside Emmy nominee Tituss Burgess, Tony champ Jane Krakowski, and two-time Emmy winner Carol Kane, plus a slew of guest stars (including Laura Dern, Daveed Diggs, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, Peter Riegert, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Sedaris this past year).
The series was renewed by Netflix for a fourth season earlier this week and will begin production in a few months. Of that news Kemper says, “It does feel like really good fortune because for a while there we weren’t sure what the timing of it was going to be, when it was going to air. It’s very lucky to make it to Season 4. To make it to any season, but this is wonderful, wonderful news.”
After several years on “The Office” on television and “Bridesmaids” on film, Kemper is enjoying her biggest success as a leading actress. She was nominated at the 2016 Emmys for Best Comedy Actress for the first time in her career and has two straight noms from the Screen Actors Guild.
