Emmy experts clash over who’ll win Best Drama Actress & Actor: Elisabeth Moss? Sterling K. Brown?

In the nail-biting 2017 Emmy races for Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Actor, our experts make important cases for multiple performers to prevail. Who do YOU think will win? Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil is joined by Anne Thompson (Indiewire) and Pete Hammond (Deadline) to discuss these two exciting categories in our new video slugfest.

The six Best Drama Actress contenders are Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”), Claire Foy (“The Crown”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Keri Russell (“The Americans”), Evan Rachel Wood (“Westworld”) and Robin Wright (“House of Cards”). The seven nominees for Best Drama Actor are Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), Anthony Hopkins (“Westworld”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”), Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”), Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) and Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”).

“I think Elisabeth Moss [will win], because it’s her time,” declares Hammond. “‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is gonna win something and it’s gonna win that. She’s very well-liked, and she’s on the talk show circuit.”

While Thompson agrees that Moss is a frontrunner, she also thinks we need to watch out for the breakout star of “The Crown.” “Claire Foy is the competition and Claire Foy can win. I think it’s a very, very close race between the two of them.”

With last year’s Best Actor winner Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”) snubbed, that leaves the door open for a new Emmy champ. Hammond is backing “Better Call Saul’s” Odenkirk, saying, “That show’s been building in the minds of Emmy voters. AMC’s got one thing to get behind and it’s that show.”

Thompson makes the case for Brown, reminding everyone that he just won for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” last year and that “People adore him.” However, O’Neil warns, “Vote-splitting is a very real thing,” and that Brown could be hurt by his “This Is Us” co-lead Ventimiglia.
