Emmys 2016: Early frontrunners and personal picks
After this year’s Emmy nominations left jaws on the floor the Gold Derby team of Ralph Galvan, Charles Bright and myself got together via webcam (watch above) to break it all down, beginning with our personal picks.
Declares Bright, “Laurie Metcalf getting three nominations is always a good thing in my book. She’s having this wonderful career resurgence in television now.” This three-time Emmy champ (“Roseanne,” 1992-1994) contends in Comedy Actress (“Getting On”) and both guest categories for the comedy “The Big Bang Theory” and the drama “Horace and Pete.”
For Galvan, “it was great to see Louie Anderson (‘Baskets’) get in for Comedy Supporting Actor. I think he’s so deserving and gave the best comedic performance on the male side this season.”
In my case, “I’m happy for actors in Emmys’ favorite shows that are often overshadowed by their cast mates at awards. People like Matt Walsh from ‘Veep’ and Maisie Williams from ‘Game of Thrones.’”
Galvan was also pleased to see “Thomas Middleditch get into Comedy Actor. We were thinking that these actors were cursed on ‘Silicon Valley’. They would never get in and they were so good. This season Middleditch was exceptional.”
And Bright points out that “even if it doesn’t foretell a victory this year, ‘Silicon Valley’ is getting more and more nominations. Just like ‘Veep’ kept on doing before winning last year.”
