Emmys 2016 Slugfest: Best Drama Guest Actor
Who will win the Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actor? After watching the episodes submitted by each of the nominees, my Gold Derby colleagues Marcus James Dixon, Riley Chow, Zach Laws, Amanda Spears and I got together via webcam (watch above) to share our thoughts on who we think will win and why.
The nominees are Mahershala Ali (“House of Cards”) for the episode “Chapter 44,” Hank Azaria (“Ray Donovan”) for the episode “One Night in Yerevan,” Reg E. Cathey (“House of Cards”) for the episode “Chapter 50,” Michael J. Fox (“The Good Wife”) for the episode “Taxed,” Paul Sparks (“House of Cards”) for the episode “Chapter 49” and Max von Sydow (“Game of Thrones”) for the episode “The Door.”
Dixon asks the panel who they think is the frontrunner. As far as I am concerned, this race is too close to call. “I’m so torn by this. I’m so torn, I really don’t know what to say. I think you can make an argument for every single one of these nominees.” After a pause, I admit that I am going out on a limb, adding, “at the moment, I am going with Hank Azaria [for ‘Ray Donovan’].”
Azaria is not one of the favorites to win this category, which is why the panel are surprised by this choice. “I just drank water and I almost choked!” Dixon jokes.
Laws says the presumptive favorite, Von Sydow (“Game of Thrones”) will win. “This a guy who has been acting for over 70 years and he has never won a major Hollywood award. He’s been nominated for two Oscars, this is his second Emmy nomination, he’s a legend, actors love him. … This would be a really great way to reward someone still active at 87 years of age.”
Chow says we ought to be cautious in predicting Von Sydow. “Last year I was predicting Diana Rigg because she’s a name, she’s on ‘Game of Thrones’ and she’s a regular in a guest category. And she lost to Margo Martindale [for ‘The Americans’]. So I feel like I’m not going to make that mistake again by picking Max Von Sydow,” he argues. “I’m going with last year’s winner, Reg E. Cathey [for ‘House of Cards’] because that is the safe thing to do. With Cathey, we know he can win with material that he shouldn’t be wining with.”
Spears agrees with this logic. “If I was going off the tapes, I would go with Reg E. Cathey, ironically. He has two great scenes with Kevin Spacey. He has the impact.”
Dixon notes that this category could go any number of ways, mentioning Cathey’s co-star Mahershala Ali. “I love him with Molly Parker, they have the emotional relationship on the show as opposed to [Kevin] Spacey and [Robin] Wright.”
“I think I’m more confused than ever. I came into this thinking that Max Von Sydow was going to win and now I don’t know what to do!” I agree that “this is one of the categories to watch, it could be any of these guys.”
