Hugh Dancy Q&A: ‘The Path’

During our recent webcam chat (watch above), “The Path” star Hugh Dancy discusses how he originally had a lot of reservations about playing the role of Cal Roberts, an unofficial cult leader of the Meyerist Movement. “In my mind, there’s so many bad versions of that. I mean cult leader has already become code for ‘terrible person’ in our culture,” the actor explains. But what ultimately won him over was “the writers were committed to the faith of this person and all the characters and their need for faith in their lives.”

The first season of “The Path” concludes this week on Hulu, and cast members are already in production on the second season. Also starring are three-time Emmy winner Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) and Golden Globe nominee Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective”) as married couple Eddie and Sarah Lane. Sarah’s grown up in the movement and Eddie came to it later in life, but he is starting to have doubts about his faith and doesn’t want anyone to clue into that. As Cal, Dancy is in both of their lives as he juggles the feelings he’s always had for Sarah and continues to assist Eddie to attain a higher position in the movement.

The show will be on the Emmy Awards ballot for the first time, and Dancy makes it clear that he believes both he and Paul should be competing in the Best Drama Actor category together. As for a possible submission to voters, he singles out the third episode titled “A Homecoming.” It is one of his favorites simply because he got to work with Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner, who played his estranged mother. He concedes “the episode is not very representative of the series as a whole because it was this odd little road trip. On the other hand you got to learn a little bit about whom he was and that was very helpful for me going forward.” He adds that other possible submissions could be either “The Shore” or “A Room of One’s Own.” Dancy received an Emmy nomination a decade ago for playing the Earl of Essex in “Elizabeth I.” He was defeated by co-star Jeremy Irons, who played the Earl of Leicester.

Speaking of cults, Dancy also discusses his canceled-too-soon series “Hannibal” that ended last summer and says the chances of it making a return to television are very possible: “With the conversations I’ve had (with creator Bryan Fuller), there’s actually quite a clear game plan for how the thing could re-coalesce, if that is a word, a few years down the line. Clearly, you have to do far more to those people than stab them multiple times and throw them off a cliff” in order to kill them.
