Jay Baruchel Q&A: ‘Man Seeking Woman’

“When you make a show like this it becomes a pissing contest of misery to a certain degree,” explains Jay Baruchel as we chat via webcam about his FXX series “Man Seeking Woman.” He plays Josh Greenberg who, over the course of two seasons, has navigated being single and dating having been dumped by a long-term girlfriend.

Reflecting on the success of his critically acclaimed series, the actor says, “We are trafficking in very timeless universal truths. We can spend half an hour making light of the stress one goes through crafting the perfect text, and you could replace text with stone tablet. It’s the same that it ever was: do your best and try not to get the shit kicked out of you.”

Discussing the use of surreal sequences ranging from his character dating an actual troll to his heart literally bursting in the middle of a date. the actor says, “If the show acknowledged it was crazy every time it was crazy, I don’t know if we’d be having this conversation.”

For Barcuhel, “the whole point is for the audience to hopefully see themselves in these situations. Even if it’s with a penis monster, or I’m having sex with a car. If we’ve done our jobs correctly the audience sees themselves in these situations. And the only way we are able to do that is if we play them completely straight.”

We also dish his work as the voice of Hiccup in the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise. The first of these animated films fligth before “Game of Thrones” and Baruchel declares that if “push came to shove, Hiccup and the Dragon Riders would smoke Daenerys.”
