Kate Mulgrew Q&A: ‘Orange is the New Black’
"It’s physically impossible to put words to how I knew both organically, imaginatively, and creatively that Red was mine,” actress Kate Mulgrew beams in an exclusive webchat with Gold Derby (watch below).
After four decades on the small screen, Mulgrew received her first Emmy nomination this summer for her playing Galina ‘Red’ Reznikov on the Netflix dramedy "Orange is the New Black." Her character is the head chef of Litchfield Penitentiary, which gives her a considerable amount of power over the inmates as she decides who eats or who will be punished or starved.
Before her incarceration, she ran her family restaurant and delicatessen with her husband before getting involved with the Russian mafia. These two sides of Red are featured in the episode Mulgrew submitted to Emmy judges: ‘Tit Punch.’ Of that selection, she says, "I chose this immediately," even though some suggested the funny installment "The Chickening" from later in the season.
In the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category, her competitors are Mayim Bialik ("The Big Bang Theory"), Julie Bowen ("Modern Family"), Anna Chlumsky ("Veep"), Allison Janney ("Mom"), and Kate McKinnon ("Saturday Night Live"). As for Emmy day, Mulgrew says she will give no spoilers about her potential red attire but hints, "I don’t think I’d let Red down, do you?"
