Kristen Schaal Q&A: ‘The Last Man on Earth’

"I think [Fox] was a little nervous about whether or not people would tune in if they didn't know if there was a larger cast, so I'm glad that they kept it a secret for as long as they did," Kristen Schaal tells Gold Derby about keeping her new role hush-hush on "The Last Man on Earth." "It's fun to have a special secret that nobody knows about but you."

According to exclusive Gold Derby odds, Schaal's potential Emmy competitors this year would be Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep") with 3/1 odds, Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation") at 5/1, Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie") with 13/2 odds, Lily Tomlin ("Grace and Frankie") at 9/1, Jane Fonda ("Grace and Frankie") with 10/1 odds and Lisa Kudrow ("The Comeback") at 14/1.

Being nominated against them "would be a great honor," Schaal admits. "I guess I would feel like I got into the coolest kids in town club. I wonder if we would get to hang out together. I feel like I would probably talk really loud because I'd be so nervous around them because I look up to them so much."

As for her potential episode to submit to Emmy judges should get get nominated, she teases, "I know there's a couple really delicious, juicy Carol moments coming up in future episodes, but I haven't seen them yet. But what we've seen so far, probably Episode 3, which is 'Raisin Balls and Wedding Bells,' where we get married. Because that was such a delight. It was so fun just being in a show with just one other person, and that other person being Will Forte is something that is so special to me, and so rare and cool."

Also in our chat, Schaal gives a great personal theory about what happened to all of the dead bodies on "The Last Man on Earth" and talks about Jon Stewart leaving "The Daily Show" and whether she'd ever want to sit in his chair. And regarding lending her voice to Louise Belcher on Emmy-winning "Bob's Burgers," Schaal says she'd be happy doing that "until I'm 90."
