Kunal Nayyar Q&A: ‘The Big Bang Theory’
"The Big Bang Theory" fans waited a long time for Kunal Nayyar 's character, Raj Koothrappali to finally speak to girls without the aid of alcohol. As the actor revealed during our recent webcam chat, "The beast that has lived inside Raj for six seasons has finally come out. I'm not sure that's a good thing! He has finally gotten over his selected mutism, which as an actor has been really fun because I can be in big scenes with people instead of thinking about everything I want to say."
Raj is part of a quartet of scientist friends — the others are played by three-time Emmy champ Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki and Simon Helberg) — who discuss sci-fi, video games and even their love lives. Indee, in this seventh season of the hit CBS comedy, Raj has gone on dates and had romantic adventures in several episodes.
He also became a bit of a party planner. Of those episodes, he says, "That was really fun that he got that sort of murder mystery dinner party, loves planning and cooking and sort of his metrosexual side. Everything got bigger and bigger and bigger! You could actually see Raj getting so excited about planning this for his friends because he loves his friends and wants them to have a good time." He added that executive producer Chuck Lorre and the writers encouraged him to be "big and insane" with this storyline.
Boosted by a massive syndication deal, the geeky comedy has never been more popular. It has the support of critics and the industry as well. The program has contended at the Emmys the past three years as Best Comedy Series and prevailed at last year's Critics Choice TV Awards. And Nayyar has been part of their Best TV Comedy Ensemble bid at the SAG Awards for the past three years.
