Loren Bouchard Q&A: ‘Bob’s Burgers’ creator
During our recent webcam chat (watch above), “Bob‘s Burgers“ creator Loren Bouchard revealed the episode of the current fifth season of this Fox animated series that will be submitted to Emmy voters. “We chose ‘The Horse Rider-er’,” which centers around Tina Belcher (Dan Mintz) riding a horse for the first time and how it doesn‘t go exactly as planned. As he explains, “It has a very sweet heart and is very appealing. We felt like we had to submit it right from the table read.“
“Bob’s Burgers” has contended for Best Animated Program at the Emmys every year since its second season, winning in 2014 with the episode “Mazel-Tina“ that also centered on Tina. Bouchard admits to having had mixed feelings about what an Emmy win would mean prior to prevailing. “Wanting it is almost toxic. You don‘t want to want it because it gets so complicated and painful.”
It ended up being even more complex for Bouchard as he was on vacation in Cape Cod with his family at the same time as the Creative Arts Awards. Not normally a superstitious person, he thought about catching a red-eye to Los Angeles for the ceremony but then decided it would almost certainly jinx his chances only to have him fly back the next day as a loser. Instead, he decided not to disrupt his vacation plans and ended up very happy with the results when his phone started blowing up with congratulations from all over.
We discuss why so many big names want to play recurring characters on the show including Oscar winner Kevin Kline (Mr. Fischoeder) and Aziz Ansari (Darryl). As Bouchard explains, the writers identify someone that they want to have be a part of an episode and then write the part around that performer. This is how two of the show‘s female characters ended up being voiced by men with Linda played by John Roberts and Tina by Mintz.
Among the other topics we delved into are the depth of supporting characters in the “Bob‘s Burgers“ universe, the role animation plays in this new era of television, Bouchard‘s long working relationship with H. Jon Benjamin (voice of Bob Belcher) and even how the show got him into trouble with a parent at his child‘s school.
