Rotten Tomatoes editor Matt Atchity on Oscars
Whenever Rotten Tomatoes editor Matt Atchity chats with Gold Derby, the videos get thousands of extra plays beyond the usual tally. That’s because viewers appreciate his shrewd views expressed in firm harrumphs.
For example, in our latest yapfest, Atchity asserts: “The Oscar race isn’t about the best movies! It’s about what the academy likes.” Testify, bro! He notes that the academy will probably like “Argo” because “it’s based on a true story. It’s exciting. It’s a well-made movie and Hollywood saves the day.”
Thus “Argo” is strong contender for Best Picture, Atchity says, and “Ben Affleck has a really, really good shot of taking home Best Director.”
In terms of the Best Actor race, he adds, “I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s going to come down to Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington and at this point I’m going to give the edge to Daniel Day-Lewis.”
Hey, why no mention of Joaquin Phoenix, who led the derby just two months ago when “The Master” lit up the Toronto and Venice film festivals?
“The damage is done,” Atchity says, referring to Phoenix bashing Oscar as “total, utter bullshit … and the stupidest thing in the whole world.”
“If he gets nominated, he’s going to have to do some serious lobbying and mea culpas and I do’t see him doing that,” Atchity adds.
