Tina Fey: Still ‘chasing’ Emmys for ’30 Rock’
“Going to the Emmys or winning something like an Emmy is what I imagine heroin to be like,” said Tina Fey in a video chat with Gold Derby. “It’s so wonderful that first time, and then you’re kind of just a junkie chasing that first time for the rest of your life.”
Fey knows a lot about winning Emmys, having a haul of seven trophies in the past decade out of 20 nominations. Her NBC program “30 Rock” won as Best Comedy Series three times in 2007, 2008, and 2009. In 2008, she bagged Best Comedy Actress with the episode “Sandwich Day” and for writing the episode “Cooter.” She won her first Emmy in 2002 as co-head writer of “Saturday Night Live” and returned to that variety show to earn another trophy as Best Comedy Guest Actress in 2009.
She has three more bids this year for “30 Rock”: Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actress, and Best Special Class Short-Format Nonfiction Program (for the online offshoot “Ask Tina”). In the acting race, she has submitted the episode “The Tuxedo Begins” to Emmy judges. In that segment, her character Liz Lemon starts dressing as a witch-haired crazy lady in order to scare off competition for a good seat on the New York City subway or at a movie theater.
Of the submission, she said, “For me anyway, it was a clear-cut choice of sort of the biggest swing we’ve ever taken with Liz Lemon. My favorite part was standing on the street in that crazy full Joker makeup and Alec (Baldwin) doing a stunt where he threw me. Then sort of capping the scene off with Will Forte running away down the street with no pants on. We only got two takes before a New York City police officer came over and was like, ‘Hey! What’s going on here? Put your pants on!'”
Fey is competing against “a strong group” of six other ladies – Zooey Deschanel (“New Girl“), Lena Dunham (“Girls“), Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie“), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep“), Melissa McCarthy (“Mike and Molly“), and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation“) – as Best Comedy Actress this time.

Of the quality of roles and working in television, she said, “I think TV has always been a really great proving ground for women in comedy. They get a lot more chances for whatever reason than we do in the movies. They get to carry shows. They get to be creators of shows, and so I think it’s just carrying on a nice tradition that’s been going on since Lucille Ball.”
Fey and the writing staff have been working for several weeks on scripts and storylines for the seventh and final season of “30 Rock.” It will be a shortened 13-week run that will debut on October 4. Fey said that they have a “bucket list” of guest stars they want to return one last time, including Will Arnett, Jon Hamm, Salma Hayek, Chris Parnell, Michael Sheen
