Tituss Burgess Q&A: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’
“It was so gargantuan, so Herculean, so detailed,” declares Tituss Burgess about this season’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” script for the episode “Kimmy’s Roommate Lemonades.” In our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), he discusses his Emmy episode submission for 2017: “It was a little intimidating, to be perfectly honest with you; not because I thought I had to fill anyone’s shoes or anything like that. But that was the first episode where I thought Titus was his most vulnerable.”
On this second episode of the third season for Netflix, Titus Andromedon can’t wait to see his boyfriend Mikey (Mike Carlsen) after returning from work on a cruise ship but sees him with another man. What follows is a series of music video parodies of the mega-popular “Lemonade” by Beyonce featuring Burgess. In the end, it’s a touching moment when Titus breaks up with Mikey to let him try and find happiness.
Burgess celebrates his third consecutive nomination as Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the Emmys. He is contending against last year’s champ Louie Anderson (“Baskets”), two-time winners Alec Baldwin (“Saturday Night Live”), Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”), and Tony Hale (“Veep”), and returning nominee Matt Walsh (“Veep”).
He also picked up his first ever SAG Awards nomination early this year. Of that recognition he emotionally reveals, “That was very special. I never set out to be a TV star or anything like that — it was all theater. To have my peers be so warm and welcoming and acknowledge my work in many, many, many ways was more gratifying than any of the other accolades. I still pinch myself and feel like I don’t belong.”
