Tommy Dewey Q&A: ‘Casual’

“There was a sense that we’d set the bar pretty high and didn’t want to disappoint,” reveals Tommy Dewey during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above) about the second season of “Casual.” The first season of this Hulu original about a dating app co-founder (Dewey) whose sister (Michaela Watkins) and niece (Tara Lynne Barr) move into his home following her divorce received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy Series, so expectations were high. However, “everyone we work with is pro enough to know that you can’t really have that hanging over you, so we just kind of approached it as we did the first and tried to make every day excellent.”

While the first season took a sharp look at modern dating, the second season delved deeper into the family’s struggles. “I think we’re on two very strong tracks on the show,” divulges Dewey. “We deal with modern dating in relationships and the messiness therein, but we also deal with family in a cool and interesting way, and siblings in a cool and interesting way.” He adds, “there’s a lot of variety there, jumping between those two main rails.”

Dewey received a Writers Guild nomination this year in the Short Form New Media category for “Now We’re Talking.” Could he receive his first Emmy nomination as Best Comedy Actor? Check out our full interview above for more about his work on “Casual.”
