Walton Goggins Q&A: ‘The Hateful Eight’

"Any actor that gets that call from Quentin Tarantino doesn't ask questions. You just say 'Yes,'" admits Walton Goggins about co-starring in the new western film "The Hateful Eight." In our recent interview, he adds, "Very few people have been afforded that invitation, and you know that you're going to measure your life as who I was before this experience and who I am afterwards."

In the latest movie from director and writer Tarantino, Goggins plays Chris Mannix, a man stranded in a blizzard who may or may not be a newly-elected sheriff. He hitches a ride on a stagecoach with a fugitive (Jennifer Jason Leigh) being transported through post-Civil War Wyoming, a bounty hunter (Kurt Russell), and a major (Samuel L. Jackson). The severe weather forces them and other dastardly people to take refuge in a haberdashery, where there are lots of secrets and lies among the eight characters.

In discussing his character, Goggins explains, "Chris Mannix is an agitator. He's a blowhard. He's a rebel rouser. He's a person that if you have an exposed wound, he's going to stick his finger in it and create controversy. He stirs the pot. You're dealing with a guy who's in an arrested state of development. It's over the course of this movie that the layers of this onion are peeled back, and you realize who he is and how his worldview has been dictated."

Goggins became known with his roles on "The Shield" and "Justified." That latter FX program brought him an Emmy nomination in 2011 and four bids from the Critics' Choice Awards. He will next star on the HBO comedy series "Vice Principals" with Danny McBride and Georgia King.
