Wendi McLendon-Covey Q&A: ‘The Goldbergs’

“I’m campaigning for the show,” admits “The Goldbergs” star Wendi McLendon-Covey who plays the mother of all mothers, Beverly Goldberg, on the hit ABC comedy. Covey herself is a contender for a Best Comedy Actress nomination in this year’s Emmy race after scoring two consecutive Critics’ Choice Awards bids in 2015 and 2016 for playing the ultimate “smother.” “It’s all so weird,” she adds. “I’m just so thrilled to make a living doing this. So to think of awards on top of that it’s just so weird.” Watch our exclusive video with Covey above.

The 1980s-based laffer, which also stars Jeff Garlin and George Segal, is such a hit for ABC that it reaped two additional seasons from the network, which is a rarity for any show. “Two at a time!? That came out of nowhere. I was completely floored by that. I always thought I was too weird to be on a network show and now here I am. Loving it. We’re lucky. We’re very lucky.”

Covey’s Beverly Goldberg character is based on the real-life mother of “The Goldbergs” creator Adam F. Goldberg. Covey admits that being the “smother” to her TV family brought out real emotion throughout the season. “When I was getting emotional with them in the season finale, that was our last episode for the season so I was in essence saying goodbye to them for the next four months and I don’t like being without them. I love our cast and our crew, and I feel lost when I don’t get to see them every day.”

While her show has tackled many great themes of classic 80s movies such as “Karate Kid” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” there is one that Covey is pushing hard for. “I’m dying to do a vacation episode. Like a ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ where they drive across country. I want to see the Goldbergs get stuck in a car with each other in that station wagon for a week.”

To find out which episode Covey would submit to Emmy voters, her interactions with the real life Beverly Goldberg, and just how much she feels like a “smother” to her TV kids, be sure to watch our interview above.
