Our four pundits — Gold Derby forum moderators Darrin Dortch, Rob Licuria and David Schnelwar — and Gold Derby executive editor Paul Sheehan agree on just two of the five nominees for Pop Album at this year’s Grammys: “The Fame Monster” (Lady Gaga and “Teenage Dreams” (Katy Perry).
Darrin says, “Gaga, the biggest pop star of the year, will obviously get in here. Veterans James Taylor, Carole King and Sheryl Crow are also safe bets. Past Best New Artist winners Maroon 5 are past nominees here and their album is freshest in voters mind so I’ll predict them, too. Katy Perry will get the ‘young pop star’ slot, but watch out for Susan Boyle, whose album sold like hotcakes, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Jack Johnson or any of the other younger contenders.”
And David writes, “I am pretty confident this will be the lineup. Sheryl Crow’s and Sarah McLachlan‘s albums have been nominated consistently since the Grammys have introduced the genre album categories.”
