When Emmy loves you, she often gives with both hands. TV history is full of shows and stars awarded year after year. Candice Bergen won five trophies for “Murphy Brown” between 1989 and 1995 while Doris Roberts earned four for “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Cloris Leachman is the all-time acting champ, winning nine (!) over the last forty years. And in recent years “30 Rock” and “Mad Men” have dominated the races for Best Comedy and Best Drama.
But just as often Emmy misses the boat on some of TV’s brightest stars. It famously took Susan Lucci nineteen tries before she won her first (and only) Best Actress award for “All My Children.” And poor Angela Lansbury and Bill Maher have a combined 42 nominations without a single win.
A dozen of today’s hottest stars are still without Emmys of their own. Some — such as Steve Carell of “The Office” — are perennial also-rans while others — like one-time “Married With Children” mates Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal — have never been nominated. Could this be the year that one or more of them finally claims the title of Emmy winner? VIEW GALLERY
