Academy narrows VFX field to seven

The visual effects branch of the academy has winnowed the 15 films in the first round down to a more manageable seven for the so-called bake-off. On Jan. 20, a 15-minute reel showcasing the visual effect in each will be screened for branch members with the wizards behind the movie magic then taking part in a Q&A. The final five will be announced on Jan. 25.

The seven contenders are:

“Alice in Wonderland”
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”
“Iron Man”
“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”
“Tron: LEGACY”

The eight films dropped from consideration were:

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”
“Clash of the Titans”
“The Last Airbender”
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians”
“Prince of Persia”
“Shutter Island”
“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”
