Adele tops Billboard 200 with Grammys contender ’21’

Buoyed by excellent reviews, British singer/songwriter Adele triumphed stateside shifting 352,000 copies of her second album “21.” That is an opening week sales record for the year to date.

Adele just tied the U.K. record set by the Beatles in 1964 with two albums and two singles in the top five. “21” has shifted 840,000 units in the past six weeks in the U.K. and remains at No. 1. Its success has boosted the profile of “19,” which now ranks number No. 2. And Adele’s studio and live versions of the single “Someone Like You” also rule that chart.

Two years ago, Adele won both Best New Artist and Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards. She also contended for both Song and Record of the Year for “Chasing Pavements.” However, her debut disc “19” did not earn a coveted Album of the Year nomination.

The first single from this new album is the rollicking “Rolling in the Deep.”
