Aziz Ansari keeps it ‘Tommy Fresh’ on ‘Parks and Recreation’ [Video]

What exactly does Tom Haverford do for the parks department in Pawnee, Indiana? According to Aziz Ansari, who plays him on the laffer “Parks and Recreation,” “He is mainly just there so he has a computer he can use to work on the other stuff he is up to.” As Ansari was cast by creators Michael Schur and Greg Daniels (“The Office”) early in the show’s development, he helped hone his character. “Some of the things we talked about early on were him being really into fashion, maybe him being into the whole nightlife scene. We thought it would be funny if there was a guy into that stuff in a town where that wasn’t even possible.”

Among Ansari’s competition for the supporting comedy actor Emmy Awards are four of his co-stars (Nick Offerman, Jim O’HeirChris Pratt, and Adam Scott). Our experts and editors predict him to be one of the stronger contenders from the show, which is also in the hunt for its first series bid.

If he is nominated, Ansari will choose between two episode for his submission to the judging panel. In “Indianapolis,” Tom creates a new cologne ‘Tommy Fresh’ which is rejected by his idol Dennis Feinstein (Jason Mantzoukas). Ansari admits, “This is what I love about the show … the town has a local cologne magnate. It’s always fun to play a range, and you see a guy crushed a little bit. “In “Soulmates,” Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) signs up for an online dating service and is accidentally matched with Tom. Says Ansari, “I got to do a lot with Amy in that episode, and she’s so good it makes you look good.”
