On Wednesday, Lil Wayne revealed that the long-awaited “Tha Carter IV” will be released on May 16. The disc stems from last fall’s “I am A Human Being” and marks a continued return to his rap roots following the rock-themed “Rebirth.” That departure was deemed a relative critical and commercial disappointment earlier last year.
“Tha Carter III” was one of the best-selling albums of 2008, with sales topping 3.5 million. Although acclaimed, it lost the Best Album of the Year title to “Raising Sand” from Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. Despite penning and performing some of the most seminal songs of our time, Lil Wayne has never contended for either Song or Record of the Year at the Grammys.
“Tha Carter III” was named Best Rap Album while “Lollipop” won Best Rap Song and Wayne took home Best Rap Solo Performance for “A Milli.” He also shared in the Best Rap Duo/Group Performance with Jay-Z, Kanye West & T.I. for “Swagga Like Us.”
The first single from the new album is “6 Foot 7 Foot” and features Cory Gunz. The unedited version of the video is below.
