Edgar Ramirez out front with 6/5 Emmy odds for Best Movie/Mini Actor

The electric performance by Edgar Ramirez as the title character in “Carlos” has him out front with 6/5 odds as Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor for the Emmy Awards this Sunday. Our exclusive Gold Derby statistics have him favored by eight of our 12 editors, 58% of users (340 votes), but surprisingly only one expert, Frazier Moore (Associated Press).

The Sundance Channel film featured Ramirez as terrorist Carlos the Jackal, a role which also earned him Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nods earlier this year. He lost both of those bids to Al Pacino (“You Don’t Know Jack”), who had won an Emmy for that movie last year.

The next most likely winner could be Idris Elba for the BBC America multiparter “Luther.” He has reasonable 10/3 odds and is favored by experts Jace Lacob (Daily Beast), Melanie McFarland (IMDB), and Chrissy Le Nguyen (Yahoo! TV). He also has the support of editors Matthew Cormier, Daniel Montgomery, and Paul Sheehan plus 9% of our users (54 votes).

Oscar champ William Hurt (“Kiss of the Spider Woman, 1985”) has 11/2 odds for his role as U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in the HBO movie “Too Big to Fail.” Experts Tim Appelo (The Hollywood Reporter), Daniel Manu (TV Without Pity), and Rick Porter (Zap2It) are predicting Hurt to prevail along with 9% of our users (55 votes). No editors are backing Hurt, however.

Laurence Fishburne received a Tony Award nomination last year for his one-man stage role as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, which he revived for this HBO production. Only expert Jill Serjeant (Reuters), editor David Schnelwar, and 6% of users are choosing him thus giving him 10/1 odds.

At the bottom of the rankings are the two stars of the ReelzChannel miniseries “The Kennedys.” Greg Kinnear portrayed President John F. Kennedy and garnered the votes of 10% of our user for odds of 33/1. Barry Pepper played his brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy and with just 6% of users predicting him to win, he has 50/1 odds.
