Golden Globes film snubs: ‘The Tree of Life,’ Steven Spielberg

The Golden Globes have not correctly predicted Oscar’s Best Picture in seven years, but have two chances to do so this year with presumed frontrunners “The Descendants,” “The Help,” and “War Horse” nominated for Best Drama Picture and “The Artist” and “Midnight in Paris” competing for Best Comedy/Musical Picture. (See full list of nominations here.)

But the Golden Globes were not without their own shocking omissions. Among the snubs: “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” after being shut out at the SAG Awards, failed to receive any Globe bids; “The Tree of Life” was also ignored; Steven Spielberg was snubbed for Best Director despite “War Horse‘s” nomination for Best Drama Picture; Steve Carell was left out for “Crazy Stupid Love” in favor of his co-star Ryan Gosling; Johnny Depp (“The Rum Diary“), usually a favorite at the Golden Globes; and Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids“).
