Grammy Predictions: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance

Gold Derby’s music experts Darrin Dortch and David Schnelwar reveal who will win and who should win in the category of Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. In the days to come, they will be predicting the rest of the top Grammy races.

They already offered their picks and predix for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as the two dance-related categories: Best Electronic/Dance Album and Best Dance Recording.

And they have also given their predictions for Best Rap SongBest Rap Album, Best Rap Duo or Group, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Solo Performance.

“Haven’t Met You Yet,” Michael Buble
“This Is It,” Michael Jackson
“Whataya Want From Me,” Adam Lambert
“Just the Way You Are,” Bruno Mars
“Half of My Heart,” John Mayer

Darrin’s take: I think everyone, except Adam Lambert, has a shot at winning this. John Mayer has won this category four times, but his latest material has been a critical and commercial disappointment, so I doubt he wins. Michael Buble was the frontrunner to win this… until nominations were announced. Bruno Mars has seven nominations this year and has the biggest hit in contention. I think Mars is the frontrunner, but watch out for Michael Jackson, as voters could throw him a sentimental win.

Will win: Bruno Mars, “Just the Way You Are”
Should win: Michael Buble, “Haven’t Met You Yet”
Spoiler: Michael Jackson, “This Is It”

David’s take: This is a very competitive race. John Mayer is a previous four time winner in this category, tying with Sting and Stevie Wonder. Mayer is possible because he is also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album. But his momentum is not what it was since his negative press earlier this year. Michael Buble’s album is nominated in the Traditional Pop field and also possible to win. His hit “Haven’t Me You Yet” crossed over to Top 40 radio and is a serious contender. Adam Lambert is the first “American Idol” alumni male to be nominated in this category. He failed to receive a Best New Artist and is not likely to win. The last posthumous winner in this category was Roy Orbison in 1990, but you still can not underestimate Michael Jackson. Bruno Mars has the most nominations of the five nominees this year and his first two solo singles peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. I think Bruno Mars will win.

Will win: Bruno Mars, “Just The Way You Are”
Should win: Michael Buble, “Haven’t Met You Yet”
Spoiler: Michael Jackson, “This Is It”
