Grammy Predictions: Best Male R&B Vocal Performance

Gold Derby’s music experts Darrin Dortch and David Schnelwar reveal who will win and who should win in the category of Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. In the days to come, they will be predicting the rest of the top Grammy races.

Here are their takes on the other R&B categories: Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

“Second Chance,” El DeBarge
“Finding My Way Back,” Jaheim
“Why Would You Stay,” Kem
“We’re Still Friends,” Musiq Soulchild (& Kirk Whalum)
“There Goes My Baby,” Usher

Darrin’s take: Usher is nominated for Contemporary R&B Album and had multiple hit singles on the charts this year so he’s the frontrunner. However, Usher lost this category in 2004 to Prince when he was coming off of a hugely successful year. Watch out for El DeBarge here. DeBarge is nominated for Best R&B Song for his single and is a veteran who is in the midst of a comeback after years of drug abuse. DeBarge earned his first pair of Grammy nominations this year and is a serious threat to win.

Will win: Usher, “There Goes My Baby”
Should win: Jaheim, “Finding My Way Back”
Spoiler: El DeBarge, “Second Chance”

David’s take: Usher is a two-time winner in this category. He lost in Best Male R&B Vocal Performance five times and has not won since 2001 and 2002. Usher is likely to finally win again this year. El DeBarge is a returning veteran and could possible upset. Musiq Soulchild has been previously nominated five times in this category and has yet to win, but is not likely to this year.   Jaheim and Kem are non-factors.

Will win: Usher, “There Goes My Baby”
Should win: Usher, “There Goes My Baby”
Spoiler: El DeBarge, “Second Chance”
