Grammys Predictions: Best Rap Album

We kick off the countdown to the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 13 with predictions from our two experts — Darrin Dortch and David Schnelwar — in the Rap Field.

“The Adventures of Bobby Ray,” B.O.B.
“Thank Me Later,” Drake
“Recovery,” Eminem
“The Blueprint 3,” Jay-Z
“How I Got Over,” The Roots

Darrin says, “Eminem will be winning Album of the Year so he’ll easily take this category, though Jay-Z and Drake released much better, more consistent albums.” He would prefer either of them to win over Eminem.

David agrees that Eminem will win Best Rap Album for the fifth time though he sees his preferred pick, Jay-Z, as a potential spoiler. As David notes, “nine out of 15 times an Album of the Year nominee won Best Rap Album. The other six times there was no Album of the Year nominee nominated for Best Rap Album. This helps Eminem’s chances since ‘Recovery’ is the only Album of the Year nominee representing the Rap field in 2010.”

However, David also observes, “Jay-Z won three Grammys in 2009 for songs off ‘The Blueprint 3’ before it was officially released. It seemed likely for Jay-Z to win and finally get nominated for Album of the Year until Eminem’s album was released. Jay-Z’s ‘The Blueprint 3’ failed to receive an Album of the Year nomination. If the Album of the Year nominated album for Best Rap Album streak ends, Jay-Z has the best shot to win it.”
