Kids’ Choice Awards top basic cable ratings

More than 7 million viewers tuned into the 24th annual Kids’ Choice Awards on Nickelodeon last Saturday. The final figure of 7.3 million puts the awardscast atop the ratings chart for basic cable channels and it ranks as the top TV program of the year geared to children. Not surprisingly, the kudocast counted kids as its biggest audience, averaging 3.5 million viewers ages 2-11.

Record online voting topped 200 million this year. Among the returning winners were three three-time champs: Favorite TV Series “iCarly” and Favorite TV Stars Selena Gomez (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) and Dylan Sprouse (“The Suite Life on Deck”) who once again beat his brother Cole. This year’s Favorite Movie Stars were Johnny Depp (“Alice in Wonderland”), who now has a bookend for his 2008 win for “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” and Miley Cyrus (“The Last Song”) who already has three wins for the film and TV versions of “Hannah Montana.”

For the third time, Jack Black hosted this raucous awardsfest. The festivites from USC’s Galen Center aired on Nickelodeon. Among those who were welcomed with a cascade of green slime were Jim Carrey, Heidi Klum, Jason Segel and Snoop Dog.
