Latest Oscar predictions from top experts

While most Oscarologists are now proclaiming “The King’s Speech” for Best Picturre, 6 of the 23 pundits polled by Gold Derby continue to back “The Social Network” — including Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Jeffrey Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere) and Erik Davis (Cinematical).

“I will not change my Best Picture pick to ‘The King’s Speech,'” Travers roars to Gold Derby. “I believe that Oscar voters will come to their senses and see that ‘The Social Network’ is the best picture of the year even if it’s not the picture that most warmed what passes for their hearts. It’s more than a battle between New Hollywood and Old. It’s a battle to ignore business as usual and put the groundbreaking movie in the Academy time capsule. That’s ‘The Social Network.'”

Most pundits nonetheless remain faithful to “Social Network” helmer David Fincher in the race for Best Director. Even though “King’s Speech’s” Tom Hooper recently won DGA, 17 of the 23 Oscar seers predict Fincher will claim the equivalent academy contest.

Recent SAG and Golden Globe champs lead the acting contests by overwhelming vote: Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”), Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”), Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) and Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”).

However, some notable pundits disagree. Peter Travers and Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood) pick Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) to win Best Actress and Dave Karger (Entertainment Weekly), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Kris Tapley (In Contention) and Anne Thompson (Indie Wire) believe Haile Steinfeld (“True Grit”) will stage an upset for supporting actress.
