Margo Martindale hopes to be ‘Justified’ by Emmys nomination [Video]

One of Margo Martindale‘s first television roles was in the epic 1989 Western miniseries “Lonesome Dove.” More than three decades on, the character actress has come into her own as Mags Bennett, the manipulative matriarch of a feuding family on the modern-day Western “Justified.”

On Monday, the nascent Critics Choice Awards recognized her with a Drama Supporting Actress bid and she is a strong contender to repeat in this race when Emmy nominations are announced July 14. Citing this as “the most satisfying role I’ve ever played,” Martindale told Gold Derby senior editors Chris Beachum and Rob Licuria that Mags was, “unfortunately somebody I understand very well!”

Her character took her own life at the end of the season, after the deaths of two of her sons and the jailing of a third. The actress admitted it was extremely emotional to let go of this role. Rehearsing that last scene, she, “started sobbing, because something I gave life to had to come to an end.”

Of course, she wryly noted, she could come back as a twin sister. Martindale’s sense of humor also surfaced when she spoke of working with series lead Timothy Olyphant: “He’s really smart … he’s pretty, but he’s smart first!”
