Tony Bennett is set to lead a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at this Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. Bennett, who last appeared on this annual kudocast in 1993, did a duet with Winehouse on the jazz standard “Body and Soul” in March of this year. He will present a clip from that recording session at London’s famed Abbey Road studios.
The single is set for release on Sept. 14 with proceeds to benefit a foundation set up in the singer’s name by her family. It also features on “Duets II,” Bennett’s follow-up to his 2007 Grammy-winning collaboration with other musical talents. That disc is due out on Sept. 20.
In making this announcement, Bennett said, “It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body and Soul,’ it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known.” He is also slated to introduce a musical tribute to Winehouse who wowed the 2007 VMAs with her rendition of “Rehab.” And with Adele and Lady Gaga already confirmed as performers on the show, it is possible they may take part.
