News Nuggets: Zhang Yimou’s ‘Flowers of War’ gets an Oscar-qualifying run

Scott Feinberg discusses the Academy’s Governors Awards with recipients Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones, and Dick Smith: “On Saturday night, many of the film industry’s biggest names will gather at the Hollywood & Highland Center for the third annual Academy Governors Awards ceremony, during which actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith will be presented with honorary Oscars for lifetime achievement and actress/producer Oprah Winfrey will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for extraordinary philanthropic work (which has only been awarded to 33 others, three posthumously). The three were selected for these honors by the Academy’s Board of Governors in August, and in the time since have each granted an interview to THR’s awards blogger Scott Feinberg.” HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Mark Harris considers who should replace Brett Ratner as Oscars producer: “Earlier today, the Academy sent an email to its entire membership that included Brett Ratner’s open letter, its own statement, and a pledge to ‘protect and defend our organization.’ But since for the next few days they’re all going to be living in a world of unsolicited advice, here’s mine: Stop worrying so much about protecting and defending; you’re not under attack. You did the right thing (and so did Ratner). Now shake it off and try not to make the same mistake twice. Don’t go looking for someone with the common touch who’ll save what you’ve decided is your flailing enterprise. Stop trying to get yahoos to love your show. Instead, stand up straight, square your shoulders, own your values, and hire a producer who will live up to them. And this time, Google him first.” GRANTLAND

Jason Aldean discusses who he thinks should win Entertainer of the Year at the CMAs tonight: “‘I’m not one of those people who usually says, “I’m just excited to be nominated,” because it sounds so ridiculous,’ says Aldean, ‘but in this case, with it being that award, I can honestly say that I am.’ He quickly adds, with a competitive edge in his voice, ‘Still, that’s not saying that I don’t want to win it, because I want to!’ But if Aldean couldn’t win the award, he admits that he’d like to see Keith Urban take the trophy home. ‘He’s just a great musician,’ the singer says. ‘I was out on tour with him a few years ago, and I got a chance to watch him perform every night, and to me, he’s an entertainer.'” EW.COM

Foreign Film contender “Flowers of War” will receive an Oscar-qualifying run in December: “In the U.S., Wreckin Hill will distribute the movie, which premieres in China on Dec. 16 and is already that country’s foreign-language selection for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. The limited American run, however, will enable award campaigns for Best Actor and Best Director. In the film, Christian Bale stars as a stranded American who pretends to be a priest to protect himself and others from the Japanese army.” EW.COM

The 2nd Annual Comedy Awards will air on Comedy Central: “While the inaugural awards show last year was billed as an MTV Networks event and aired simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike TV, TV Land, VH1 and Nick At Nite, this year’s ceremony was announced as a Comedy Central event and will premiere on the channel May 6. It will be taped at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on April 28. Nominations for The Comedy Awards will be announced in early 2012 … The winners are chosen by an invitation-only voting body comprised of 1500 working members from the comedy community including writers, producers, performers and directors.” DEADLINE
