Following the launch of our Razzie prediction center, the awards’ founder John Wilson sat down with us to dish this year’s contenders. Among the Worst Picture competitors we discussed were “Breaking Dawn: Part 1,” “Transformers Dark of the Moon,” “Jack and Jill” and “Bucky Larson.”
Back in 1980, John was inspired to create the Razzies — short for the Golden Raspberry Awards — following a double feature of the Village People biopic “Can’t Stop the Music” and the Olivia Newton-John musical “Xanadu.” He has guided Razzie voters over the last thirty years in “honoring” the worst in cinema. The group’s notorious winners for Worst Picture include “Showgirls” (1995), “Battlefield Earth” (2000), and “Gigli” (2003).
Along with Worst Picture, the Razzies also recognize the worst in acting, writing, and directing. Several former Razzie “winners” could contend again this year, including “Jack and Jill” star Adam Sandler. He took Worst Actor in 1999 for “Big Daddy” and could be nominated for both Worst Actor and Actress in dual roles as a feuding brother and sister. Three-time Razzie nominee Nicolas Cage could finally prevail for the triple bill “Season of the Witch,” “Drive Angry,” and “Trespass.”
However, it may be newcomers that dominate the field. “Transformers” star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, whom John says “makes Megan Fox look like Meryl Streep,” could get a nod for her screen debut. She replaced Fox following a dispute with director Michael Bay. Huntington-Whiteley’s co-star Shia LaBeouf is likely to reap his first bid for Worst Actor.
Last year’s Oscar winner for Best Actress Natalie Portman (“Black Swan“) could be cited for “Your Highness,” “No Strings Attached,” and “Thor.” Oscar nominee and telecast host James Franco (“127 Hours“) is also in contention for “Your Highness.” And another Best Actress champ, Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” 2002), may slide in for “Trespass” or “Just Go with It.”
