Regis Philbin to receive TV Land Legend Award

Two weeks after announcing he is retiring from his daily talk show, Regis Philbin received the news that cablecaster TV Land will give him the Legend Award at their ninth annual kudos on April 10 with his typical curmudgeonly flair: “Hey, it’s about time!”

Philbin, who did express his gratitude,  follows in the line of other TV icons honored including his great pal Don Rickles, as well as Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Garry Marshall.

In making the announcement, TV Land President Larry W. Jones said, “Regis Philbin is an adored television icon. A native New Yorker, he has given a slice of the city to all of his loyal viewers. TV Land is thrilled to have an opportunity to honor him.”

Among the others to be feted at these festivities are laffer “The Cosby Show” and “Family Ties” which made Thursday night must-see TV on NBC in the 1980s. The kudocast, which will take place at New York’s Javits Center, will air on TV Land on April 17.
