Will Supporting Actor be most competitive race at this year’s Oscars?

The Supporting Actor race at this year’s Oscars is shaping up to be a dogfight. There are a slew of actors generating strong buzz for high profile roles, any of whom could end up in the final five.

Oliver Stone‘s new film “Savages” is earning solid reviews and its cast includes both 2000 Supporting Actor winner Benicio Del Toro (“Traffic”) and two-time Best Actor nominee John Travolta. Both of these bold-faced names have just been addded to our Oscars prediction center, as has the film’s female foil — Salma Hayek

Django Unchained” features two fellows who have contended in this race in the past — 2009 champ Christoph Waltz (“Inglorious Basterds”) and 1993 nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”) — as well as Don Johnson. I know everyone is declaring DiCaprio the early frontrunner, but doesn’t he feel like a lead Oscar waiting to happen? Then again, we said the same about Renee Zellweger.

The Gangster Squad” supporting players includes two-time Best Actor champ Sean Penn (“Mystic River,” “Milk”) and two-time Best Actor nominee Nick Nolte as well as past category contender Josh Brolin

This category has been painfully weak in the past few years allowing one actor to sweep all of the precursor prizes before prevailing at the Oscars. Maybe this year the industry will spread the wealth since so many seasoned veterans and A-listers are in the mix.
