Will Amy Poehler’s award show bits finally bring her Emmy glitz?

Last year, Amy Poehler orchestrated a mock pageant presentation of the Comedy Actress award with the other five nominees. Their effort earned a standing ovation and was the highlight of the evening.

Melissa McCarthy was the surprise winner for the first season of “Mike & Molly.” She returns to defend her title as does Poehler, who contends again for “Parks and Recreation.” Could Poehler’s playfulness and game comedic attitude finally make her a winner in the eyes of Emmy voters?

Poehler has lost both of her bids for this NBC laffer as well as two Comedy Supporting Actress races for her work on “Saturday Night Live.” During the presentation of the 2009 supporting prize, Poehler organized an enjoyable bit where the actresses wore ridiculous eyewear as their names were announced.

By encouraging such playful irreverence and showing solidarity with her category rivals, she increased the enjoyment for both the audience in the theatre and at home. That year’s winner, Kristen Chenoweth (“Pushing Daisies”), acknowledged Poehler from the podium: “That was Amy Poehler’s idea. The glasses and everything.”

Prior to those Emmys, Poehler took part in a roundtable discussion with Newsweek where she recalled: “One of the best Emmy bits I ever saw was when Tim Conway, Harvey Korman and Chevy Chase were all in the same category. And they were like ‘Tim Conaway,’ and he just got up. He stood up in his seat and walked up as if he had won. And then they all walked up when they heard their name, and they stood next to each other. And then Chevy Chase won, and they were like ‘Oh, congratulations.’ The simplest little thing was so exhilarating as a kid to watch it.” [She was referring to the 1976 presentation of the now defunct Supporting Actor in a Variety Show or Special award.]

Poehler went on to reveal, “I would love to try to organize the ladies in my category to do a bit. I don’t know if they would.” Well they did! Twice! And Poehler’s comments led Sarah Silverman to suggest that the nominees wear fake mustaches, which Silverman did during the presentation of her own category, Comedy Actress.

Even if Poehler does not win this year [she is locked in a very tight race], there may still be a consolation for viewers hoping to get more screentime from her. As she told Newsweek, “When people do bits when they lose … that makes me laugh so hard!”
