Carter Bays uncertain if season 8 of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ will be last

On a television landscape where traditional multi-camera sit-coms can struggle to get recognised by awards, “How I Met Your Mother” has gotten some important recognition. Last year it was able to become the first multi-cam comedy to score a nomination in the directing category since 2005. It also stands with “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men” as one of the only multi-camera shows still on the air to get into the Comedy Series category at the Emmys.

Series co-creator Carter Bays says, “This may be controversial to say, I think it’s much harder to really direct a good multi-cam show than a single-cam show … this is a very complicated, complex, puzzle that we are putting together every week … we’re all frustrated filmmakers and we want to make it as cinematic as we can.”

“How I Met Your Mother” chronicles the story of how Ted Mosby (played by Josh Radnor) meets his future wife. As the series develops this story Carter feels, “now we’re getting to the fun stuff of the show … It’s hard not to be excited by that… It feels like we’re actually saying something not just stringing people along.”

Discussing when fans will get to the conclusion of Ted’s story Carter admits, “this season was more about going into the end game of the series, and we’re not clear on when the series will end.” He adds that Ted is, “ready for the next chapter of his life, and that will be season 8. Which may or may not be the final season, we are still trying to figure that out.”

On who will play the mother when the show reaches its climax Carter re-confirms, “it’s not Hilary Clinton … we know that for sure now,” referencing the letter the former first lady wrote to series star Jason Segal on his public offer for her to play the role. However he would not rule out Michelle Obama saying, “maybe, you never know… It’s going to take Jason convincing her to do it.”

On whether it is even known who will play the mother in the series Carter is unsure. “We know who she is, we know who the character is, but we don’t know who is going to play her as of yet. So Michelle, if you are reading or watching this, call us.”
