All six of last year’s Emmy Award nominees for Best Comedy Actress are eligible to contend again in 2012, but there are also several strong candidates hoping to push into the field.
Melissa McCarthy prevailed last year for the first season of “Mike and Molly.” Her surprise victory could have been the result of the success of the movie “Bridesmaids” which eventually net her an Oscar nom.
Among those she bested were two past winners of this award — Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”) and Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) as well as category newcomers Laura Linney (“The Big C”) who had gone three for three in previous Emmy bids and Martha Plimpton (“Raising Hope”). However, it was Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”), who masterminded the now-famous beauty pageant routine, who was the favorite last year and is far ahead in this year’s race.
Two stars of new HBO laffers could crack the lineup this year — recent Golden Globe champ Laura Dern (“Enlightened”) and 2006 category winner Julia Louis Dreyfus (“Veep”).
Other actresses from rookie shows hoping to contend are: Christina Applegate (“Up All Night”), Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings (“2 Broke Girls”), Zooey Deschanel (“New Girl”), Fran Drescher (“Happily Divorced”) and Jane Levy (“Suburgatory”).
And from returning laffers, contenders include Courteney Cox (“Cougar Town”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Big Bang Theory”), Patricia Heaton (“The Middle”), Lea Michele (“Glee”), Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds”), and the women from “Desperate Housewives” (Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria) who have one last chance to impress.
