The ballots received by the TV academy in the Emmy races for Best Comedy Actress and Supporting Actor must be thrown out and new votes taken as a result of a mistake unearthed by Gold Derby.
“The Television Academy has discovered that episodes submitted for ‘New Girl‘ nominees Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield for judging in their respective performer categories were inadvertently switched on the DVDs dubbed for Emmy voting panels,” an ATAS official told Gold Derby. “The Academy is immediately sending new DVDs with the correct episode selections to the judging panels. Their final decisions (due to the accountants on September 17) will solely be based on their evaluation of the approved episodes representing the work of Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield and all other nominees. Both actors have been made aware of the situation.”
The Sept. 17 deadline is tight considering the Emmy ceremony is on the 23rd. Initially, the first round of ballots were due to accountants at Ernst & Young by Aug. 31.
ATAS COO Alan Perris says that the goof occurred at the distribution center where DVDs are copied and mailed to voters.
The mistake was discovered when a rep for Greenfield viewed the Gold Derby slugfest video featuring editors Tom O’Neil, Matt Noble, Daniel Montgomery and Chris Beachum discussing the race for Best Supporting Comedy Actor. In it, O’Neil reported that Greenfield submitted ‘Bad in Bed’ as his episode sample to judges instead of ‘Control,’ which his reps had reported earlier. Greenfield’s rep contacted Gold Derby to investigate. O’Neil explained that he was certain of his information because he viewed the exact DVDs shipped by ATAS to voters in that category. (See photo.) The rep contacted the TV academy, which probed further, determined what occurred and decided to hurry up and redo the voting prior to the ceremony on Sept. 23.
At the Emmys, actors nominated in the series categories submit a sample of their best work from the past TV season to a jury of about 70 to 80 fellow actors, who view the DVDs at home, rank the contenders 1 (top score) to 6, sign an affadavit attesting that they viewed all requisite footage, then mail everything to the accountants. Below is the corrected rundown of the episodes to be sent to voters for re-judging. Back in August, Greenfield’s episode “Control” was mistakenly submiited as Deschanel’s entry and her choice, “Bad in Bed,” was entered as Greenfield’s.
