News Nuggets: Neil Patrick Harris returns as host of the Tony Awards

The View” prodcer Bill Geddie will be honored with a Daytime Emmy for Lifetime Achievement. From the press release: “‘Bill Geddie is an icon in the television industry,’ said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS. ‘When he and Barbara Walters created “The View” 15 years ago, they introduced a new and innovative daytime television talk show format. We at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are proud to have Bill receive our 2012 Daytime Lifetime Achievement Award.'”

Daytime community split over whether to broadcast the Daytime Emmys: “‘The Doctors,’ which debuted in 2008, won a Daytime Emmy in 2010. ‘That probably brought a few eyeballs to (our) show,’ says exec producer Carla Pennington. ‘A lot of soap fans watch the Daytime Emmys, and they are our demographic.’ Says Bradley Bell, executive producer and head writer of three-time defending champ in drama ‘The Bold and the Beautiful‘: ‘I’d be happy either way. I love that it’s been on primetime all these years, but I wouldn’t mind losing some of the commercial aspects of the ceremony and bringing it back to celebrating daytime television.'” CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Neil Patrick Harris returns as host of the Tony Awards. From the press release: “Neil Patrick Harris will return as host of the 2012 Antoinette Perry ‘Tony’ Awards on Sunday, June 10th, live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City. This will be the third time that Harris has hosted the telecast, previously serving as host for both the 63rd Annual Tony Awards in 2009, and the 65th Annual Tony Awards in 2011.   As he did in 2011, Harris will also act as a producer, along with executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment on the 66th Annual Tony Awards.”

Some of Canada’s biggest stars skipped the Juno Awards: “Unfortunately for Canadians, the Juno music awards failed to measure up to the star-studded Grammys. Award winners Justin Bieber, Drake, and Michael Buble all had prior engagements that kept them from attending their homeland’s award show. The TV Academy has issued a call for entries for interactive media: “The deadline for entries is May 4th … This year, entries can be submitted to one of two areas of competition: Enhancement to a Television Program or Series, and Original Interactive Television Programming. The 2012 Primetime Emmy Award for Interactive Media will recognize creative excellence in interactive productions that were commercially deployed between June 1st, 2011 and May 31st, 2012.” INTERACTIVE TV TODAY
