Tom Hanks tapped to be a presenter at the Oscars: “Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks will present at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced today. Hanks, who is a governor of the Academy, won consecutive Oscars in 1993 and 1994 for his lead performances in ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘Forrest Gump.’ He was also nominated for his leading roles in ‘Big,’ ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘Cast Away.’ Hanks can currently be seen in the Best Picture-nominated ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.'”

Academy member Madonna is casting her vote for “The Tree of Life“: “In an interview from her Sunset Boulevard home, which appears in Sunday’s paper, the singer spoke about her new movie as a director, ‘W.E.,’ her nervousness about her upcoming Super Bowl performance and the sounds she’s mining on her new album, ‘MDNA.’ Amid her many projects, Madonna, who is a member of the academy in the actor’s branch, said she does make time to watch the screeners Oscar voters receive and had selected a top choice. ‘”Tree of Life” is stunningly beautiful. John Shaffner elected chair of the Art Directors Council: “Shaffner was formerly Vice-Chair of the Council, a position now filled by Corey Kaplan. Also elected to the Art Directors Council was Jack Fisk. The ADG has four craft councils: Art Directors; Scenic, Title & Graphic Artists; Set Designers & Model Makers; and Illustrators & Matte Artists. Shaffner has just completed four years as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He presently works as Production Designer on ‘Two and a Half Men,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ and ‘Mike & Molly.'”

Martin Scorsese discusses how much Hollywood has changed at the Santa Barbara Film Festival: “Scorsese reflected first on the severity of awards season these days, which he said is ‘very arduous, in a way. But it’s a very high class problem to have.’ Even the process of opening a film is much different, he noted, thinking back on his work in the early 1970s. ‘When the film opened, there was really no red carpet unless it was “Cleopatra” or “Ben-Hur,”‘ he said. ‘We’d go in on a Sunday to see if anyone was in line to see the movie, then we’d go get Chinese food or whatever and that was it.'” IN CONTENTION

Patric M. Verrone will receive the 2012 Morgan Cox Award for his Writers Guild service: “Former Writers Guild of America, West President and Emmy and Writers Guild Award-winning writer Patric M. Verrone is set to receive the WGAW’s 2012 Morgan Cox Award in recognition of his exemplary service to the Guild. Verrone will be honored at the 2012 Writers Guild Awards’ West Coast ceremony to be held on Sunday, February 19, 2012, at the Hollywood Palladium. ‘Patric Verrone has dedicated much of his professional life in service to this Guild and to its members. He is the embodiment of all the qualities that the Morgan Cox Award celebrates and was the unanimous choice of this year’s committee.
